After more than a year of intensive planning and installation work, the new MZA1 multi-purpose plant in Zofingen successfully went into operation at the end of 2020.

The highest requirements for process reliability and product quality have been implemented and met, as proven by the product batches already produced and delivered.

SIEGFRIED AG develops and produces active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates at its head office in Zofingen (Switzerland). A new multi-purpose plant for homogeneous as well as heterogeneous hydrogenation reactions in the high-pressure range up to 60 bar(g) was to be built in the existing, recently constructed production building. The multi-purpose plant consists of a 4 m3 high-pressure reactor as well as a further batch reactor, various templates and peripherals.

VTU Engineering was contracted to implement the planning project. The project scope included the planning, procurement, installation, commissioning and qualification of the new plant. Existing equipment including peripherals had to be partially dismantled and infrastructure facilities had to be converted or adapted to make the installation of the new plant possible. New solutions for process control and safety engineering were developed based on the customer’s comprehensive expertise and in close cooperation with SIEGFRIED’s operations and engineering departments.

Careful planning and extensive preparation for commissioning ensured that the plant has worked faultlessly from the very first batch and has delivered products of impeccable quality. The new multi-purpose plant marks another milestone in Siegfried's future strategy at the Zofingen site, and VTU is proud to be part of it.
